My macbook laptop seems slow, are there any tricks to make it go faster? It seemed to go real quick right when I got it, and I removed all of the startup stuff. Any pointers would be real helpful.

I have a hp 1020 printer i got a while back and I just got a new laptop. For some reason it does not register on my Mac. I have restarted, unplugged the usb cable, everything. it’s not a big deal b/c it is was so cheap but it would be nice if it worked. thanks in advance!

@Tom: There are a variety of things that can “slow down” a computer. Obviously, having more RAM (1gb or more) can speed things up, but may not always be the solution depending on what software you use. Go to the Apple in the top left of your screen, click “About this Mac” and finally click the “More Info” button. Cut and paste all of the information into an email and send it to us.

Also, under Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, click the System Memory tab (near the middle/bottom) and then take a screenshot (Command-Shift-3) and send that along as well, or just type out the processes and their respective CPU%.

It will also help us if you provide a list of the applications you have installed on your computer by looking in the Applications folder.

@the_copilot: Ah, HP printers. I actually had this printer a while back. How to Install the HP 1020 printer and printer drivers on your Mac:

    1. Download the Mac HP 1020/1022 driver.
    2. Delete any files related to ‘HP 1020′ in the /Library/Reciepts/ folder.
    3. Remove any HP printers in the Printer Setup Utility
    4. Install the 1020/1022 driver.
    5. Remove all files from /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet, but leave the 1020 subfolder in place.
    6. Move all files from the 1020 subfolder to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet (or, the parent folder).
    7. Shut Down your computer, when it is completely off, plug in the USB cable to the computer.
    8. Turn on your printer, then turn on the Mac.
    9. Add a new printer in the Printer Setup Utility
    10. Select HP Laserjet 1020, then click Add.

    Hope that helps!

Do you have any advice for my boyfriends mac computer, he’s trying to install Adobe Photoshop CS3, but his CS2 beta copy is preventing the installation. He purchased an upgrade of CS3 on amazon. TIA.

Great idea! I’m looking at Canon cameras versus Nikon, and people seem to go back and forth about which one is better. What do you guys use, and what should I get?

@NRd411: CS2 beta? Do you mean CS3 beta? In any case, uninstall everything, reinstall CS2, then install the upgrade. Adobe Labs has a script that will wipe out all traces of CS, but be sure to read the fineprint before you run it.

@Bill: According to PhilG, “Quick answer #1: It depends.” At T2 we have about $65,000 worth of gear, Canon, Nikon, and a lot of stuff in-between. It’s all personal preference. Read Philip Greenspuns post about which camera you should buy, I’m sure it will guide you in the right direction, and good luck.

I have created a sitemap for my web page but do not know where to place the code. Does it go in the main page and, if so, where in the html table???
    Thanks

Usually a site map resides on its own page. I would put the Site Map link in the footer of your web site.

Then to link that to your site map page, create an HTML document in the /site/ or /sitemap/ directory and link to it. If I understand your question correctly, creating a site map is just like creating any other page on a web site.
